Has your UPVC door dropped?

Sometimes old UPVC doors can drop overtime, especially if they contain glass windows / panels within it. Glass in doors is extremely heavy, something you don’t realize when you use the door. Over time the doors can drop and cause the mechanism to misalign with the keep. The hooks and rollers of the keep need to align with the keep in order to work correctly. If they do not align correctly, the door can be very stiff and hard to lock.

You may notice that you need to really push the door handle up hard in order to lock the door, often a common problem on peoples back door. You will get away with this for a while, however each time you put strain on the mechanism like this it damages the mechanism and can crack the follower.

The follower is simply the name of a square shaped hole where the spindle of the handle goes through. After a while the mechanism can break meaning your door is jammed shut. It’s at this point when a locksmith should be called.

Do you need upvc door seal replacement?

What to do if your door won’t open?

If your door won’t open then this means that one of two things has happened, either the barrel lock has broken or the door mechanism has failed. This often happens when strain has been put on the lock or mechanism over a period of time. This could be because the door dropped causing is to misalign with the keep.

The mechanism has a series of hooks, rollers and shoot bolts which shoot into the keep thus locking the door. Shoot bolts are positioned at the top an bottom of the door for additional security. A locksmith will be able to use special spreader tools to open the door from its jammed position and repair the lock and latch. Sometimes you may have the problem in reverse, where the door will not shut. This is for similar reasons as already explained due to the door dropping and will require adjusting.
