Andy responded quickly to our message and arrived when he said he would on Sunday to try to fix our door. Due to age and trickiness (we have had a few people to tend to it over the years)he had to return today. He arrived at the time he said he would and persevered patiently with our tricky door, replacing the lock mechanism and working on the door so that it opens better now than when it was first fitted a good few years ago. He was polite, profressional and clearly had a lot of knowledge. I definitely recommend him.

LOCKSMITH CROSSGATES

Locksmith Crossgates solutions providers can offer you the most effective lockout services by treating the issue professionally and courteously. These professionals will try their best to get you inside your house as quickly as possible. What’s more, locksmith professionals also provide homeowners with helpful advice on what to do in such emergency lockout situations.

9 Things You Can Do When You Are Locked Out

Getting you locked out is a frightening situation, and we feel you. However, the best thing you can do is remain calm and breathe because panicking is not going to help. Staying calm can make you find a way out rationally with a clear mind. So, here are some tips and advice for you to save yourself during a locked-out situation.

1.      Call a Locksmith

After getting locked out, your first step would be to call your emergency locksmith service right away. Professional locksmith services will be well-equipped to offer the best ways and knowledgeable advice on staying safe. They will provide the correct lockout solutions to help you enter your house quickly.

Locksmith services deal with such locked-out emergencies every day, so they have expertise in providing the best solutions. So, don’t hesitate to give them a call. Contact a lockout service in your area, such as a locksmith Crossgates team, to avail of its quick services.

2.      Inform Your Landlord

If you are living in a rented apartment, call your landlord before calling a locksmith. Almost every landlord has a set of spare keys for all the rooms or flats they are renting. You surely will be able to get back into your house soon. However, go ahead and call the locksmith if your landlord is not nearby. But ensure to keep your landlord informed, as they may think of a way out.

3.      Look for an Open Window or Back Door

It will be an added advantage if you live on the ground floor. Check whether a ground window is slightly opened. You can force open the window and climb through. Also, you may climb up the balcony and push through the sliding door. This is a great solution if you have left your keys inside your house, saving you from calling the locksmith or breaking the lock.

Although you should never leave your doors and windows open while stepping outside, there’s no harm in checking around the house once. Check the back doors too. If this trick works, it will be excellent. However, the next time you leave your house, double-check whether you have locked all your doors and windows to prevent burglary attempts.

However, if your key is jammed inside the lock or you are facing some other critical situation, you should call a locksmith. Besides, it is always safe and reliable to wait until the locksmith arrives, as it ensures a secure way of entering your apartment.

4.      Call Another Family Member

If you have more than one household member sharing the house keys, such as your spouse, kid, or roommate, call them, provided they are not locked out with you. They may have a spare key, thus saving you from the situation. Try every possible way before taking extreme measures, like breaking the door open or damaging the lock.

Also, try recalling whether anyone in your family ever took care of your houseplants or pets when you were out of town. There are chances they may have a spare key unless you have changed all your locks. Send them an SOS text. They will surely figure out a way to unlock the door.

If you live in a housing complex, visit the manager’s office to ask for an access grant for your unit. Present proof of identity, if required, alongside other evidence that you live in this complex. However, know whether there are any lockout fees you need to pay, as many apartment complexes charge whenever they are asked to help the homeowners get inside their homes.

5.      Inform the Police

If you believe someone stole your keys or you have dropped them somewhere, inform the police immediately and file a report. The police will help you track down the lost keys. And after regaining access, change all your locks immediately. Reprogramming or re-keying your locks will be significantly less expensive than costly and dangerous burglaries or house break-ins.

6.      Break In!

If nothing else works, this is the last resort. Even after trying hard to get a locksmith nearby or tracking down a spare key, if there is no other way out, breaking in might be your best solution. We know it may look fishy for passers-by who won’t know you. But you can’t stay on the streets all day waiting for some help to come your way!

LEEDS LOCKSMITH

There can be numerous ways to break in, depending on the type of lock and doorknob you have installed. For example, some locks can be opened using credit cards or bobby pins, provided you know how to use them.

After entering your apartment and taking some good rest, plan an effective solution to save yourself and your family from such future lockout possibilities. It’s because you cannot afford to break in every time. Being extra careful about not leaving your keys behind is the ultimate solution. However, at times, we tend to forget things due to work pressure or other factors. Therefore, a proper backup plan is necessary.

7.      Contact Your Homeowner’s Insurance Company

If your homeowner’s insurance policy covers locksmith services, it will save you from all damages caused due to breaking locks or lost keys. Locksmith Crossgates services may be covered under your policy. The coverage will be helpful in situations like burglaries, break-ins, lock busting, or when the locks are otherwise damaged.

Welcome to Crossgates Shopping Centre | East Leeds

If your last resort is to break into your apartment or if you feel your keys have been stolen or lost, your homeowner’s insurance policy will cover all the damage repair expenses. However, ensure that your insurance policy covers damage to locks and keys.

Ask your insurance provider to learn about the same. Or go through your contract terms and conditions. If your policy doesn’t cover this issue, make sure to include it the next time you renew your policy.

8.      Improvise Your Tools

You may have been inspired by movies about lock-picking that are done effortlessly. But in real life, it is not that easy since locks are more complex than they seem. Learn about the tools that can save you from getting locked out and stranded on the streets. For instance, paper clips, bobby pins, and hair clips can serve as your primitive locksmithing tools.

Horsham Locksmith | Adrian Your Local Locksmith | 01403 261466 (horshamslocksmith.co.uk)

It will be best if you have two paper clips or two bobby pins. You can carry them in your bag because you never know! Even if you have one, you can break it into two halves to create two DIY locksmithing tools. Here’s how you can open a lock using these tools.

Bend one of the pieces to form an “L” shape. This becomes the tension rod that holds the lock in place.
Next, straighten out the other metal piece and bend it in a small “W” at the end. This will be your main tool to unlock the lock by moving the pins inside.
Hold the L-shaped tool in place while maintaining tension in the lock.
Now, with the W-shaped piece, feel for pins inside your lock.
Finally, push the pins up using the W-shaped tool to unlatch the lock.

If yours is a standard spring bolt, all you need is a plastic card, such as a debit or credit card.

Choose an old card that you won’t mind breaking. If you have a used gift card, use that instead of destroying a debit or credit card.
Insert the card between the door and the doorframe near the latch.
Make sure that you are holding the card perpendicular to the door. You can wiggle and push the card around to create room for the card to pass through.
While pushing, bend away the card from the doorknob and attempt to slide back the latch away from the doorjamb. Try applying your body weight against the door while bending the card.
Now, slide the card between the doorframe and the latch. When the card is between the frame and the lock, push your weight against the door to unlatch and enter your house.

9.      Take Off Your Door Knob

If your door’s deadbolt is not locked, you can simply remove the doorknob to open your door. Although most doorknobs have mounting screws or concealed connections, you should be able to see a pin-sized slot or hole to the side or below the doorknob. Look for this slot by watching the doorknob closely. If you get it, try the following.

Take a thin metal piece, such as a paper clip, bobby pin, or safety pin. Insert it into the hole and apply some pressure.
When you feel resistance, keep pushing the metal piece as far as possible into the hold with one hand. With your other hand, pull and twist the doorknob at the same time.

LOCK PICKING

Continue applying pressure and pulling and turning simultaneously until the doorknob is removed.
Next, remove the decorative plate to see the lockset. Use a bobby pin, or better still, a screwdriver, if you have to pull back the locking mechanism. It should unlock the door.
How to Prevent a Lockout?

While the above tips and tricks would help most of you to come out of a lockout situation, the good news is that most of these situations are preventable. Once you get out of this frustrating situation and enter your home, it’s time to prepare for the next emergency. Have a backup plan to help you save yourself from such situations in the future without taking destructive steps or being stranded on the roads for hours.

However, the best thing would be to prevent such emergencies from occurring in the first place. Here are some recommendations and tips to prevent lockout issues.

●       Go Keyless!

Today, many home security companies provide smart digital and electronic locks that can unlock the door remotely without requiring a physical key. For example, you can unlatch the lock remotely via a custom code or smartphone app. Besides, many intelligent locks come with biometric sensors, such as fingerprint or face recognition authentication.

What’s more, you can integrate many of these advanced keyless locks seamlessly with your home security systems and other monitoring systems. If you ever get locked out in the future, you can contact professional monitoring centers, who, in turn, will inform emergency services if the situation is critical.

●       Hide a Key Somewhere

No, we are not talking about hiding it beneath the doormat, the mailbox, or a plant pot. Because that would make your house vulnerable to burglary and unauthorized intrusions, as these have become common places to hide keys. Think of a creative way to hide your spare keys. For instance, you can purchase a keyholder that comes in various shapes and forms, such as yard decorations or rocks.

These products are excellent for hiding your keys without letting anyone even take a guess. Try using items that can camouflage with the surroundings, such as fake rock-like-looking key hiders. You can also hide it inside a birdhouse or a barbecue grill in your backyard. Or you can secure the key on a nearby tree with a nail, where nobody could find it.

●       Leave Your Key with a Neighbor

Maintaining good relationships with neighbors will help in emergencies like lockouts. If you feel they are trustworthy, leave a spare key with them. Besides, leaving your spare keys with your neighbors will also give you a pair of eyes that will keep a watch on what’s going on in and around your property when you are away. You can exchange a quick communication if your neighbor notices something suspicious.

●       Have Some Peace of Mind!

While you are hiding your spare key at the best locations, there’s no 100% guarantee burglars won’t ever find it. Potential intruders are always keeping a close eye on your activities, so there’s a chance they will watch you hiding your keys.

Therefore, to have peace of mind, install a robust security or doorbell camera. It will help you monitor suspicious movements or activities in and around your apartment premises. The best part is that you can track what’s going on in real-time from your smartphone, anytime, anywhere.
