Andy responded quickly to our message and arrived when he said he would on Sunday to try to fix our door. Due to age and trickiness (we have had a few people to tend to it over the years)he had to return today. He arrived at the time he said he would and persevered patiently with our tricky door, replacing the lock mechanism and working on the door so that it opens better now than when it was first fitted a good few years ago. He was polite, profressional and clearly had a lot of knowledge. I definitely recommend him.

Insurance requirements for door locks

You may frequently be asked what kind of locks you have installed on your outside doors and windows when applying for home insurance. If your house doesn’t have the proper locks installed, you risk having to pay a higher insurance price. What are the criteria for door locks in terms of insurance? What kinds of door locks are most likely to be accepted by insurance companies? Below are some suggestions to help you save money on home insurance and maintain the safety of your home.

Lock specifications for homeowners’ insurance

There are five major types of door locks that most insurers approve of.

The deadlock with five levers

The five-lever mortice deadlock, despite what the name may imply, is a typical door lock style that you’ve probably seen before. If you’re unsure if your door lock is of this sort, look for a mortice that has been cut into the wall or door where the lock will be installed. Mortice locks are different from deadlocks in that they are built into the actual wall and can only be opened with a key. Just a keyhole and a bolt make up a deadlock. One of the greatest lock types for insurance purposes is the five-lever mortice deadlock since the more levers a mortice deadlock has, the safer it is Insurance Approved Locks

Top tip: Buying a five-lever mortice deadlock is simple, but be sure to choose one that complies with BS3621. Although it essentially has the same lock, this one complies with recent, accepted British regulations. As a condition of their home insurance policy, some insurers will require that you install a five-lever mortice deadlock BS3621 on all exterior windows and doors.

A multipoint locking system that works with a key

The key operated multi-point locking system provides even more security than the five-lever mortice deadlock because it bolts the door into the frame and locks it at multiple points with the turn of a key. Most uPVC doors have them, so if you have one, you probably already have a key-operated, multi-point locking system. Most of the time, these locks have three locking points. This means that when you turn the key, they all lock at the same time Insurance Approved Locks

To tip: The SS312 Diamond approved cylinders are most likely to meet the requirements of your home insurance for main doors, so keep an eye out for these.

Rim automatic dead lock or night latch

A good lock is the dead latch, also called the night latch. But home insurance companies would rather see it used with one of the other locks as an extra safety measure than as a stand-alone lock. Since these locks are attached to the front door instead of being mortised into the wall, they are much less secure than the five-lever mortice deadlock.

But a double-locking night latch is a good way to keep your home safe at night because it lets you lock yourself in. As usual, look for locks that meet British standards, as these are more likely to be accepted by most home insurance companies. Even though they give you more security, you shouldn’t use them as your only security measure Insurance Approved Locks

Window locks with keys

All windows on the ground floor and those that can be reached should have locks that work with a key. Most of the time, these locks are attached to the window handle or at the bottom or top of the window frame. But the most important thing about these locks is that they need a key. If you don’t use these windows often or aren’t at home, make sure to lock them with a key when you’re not there Insurance Approved Locks

French doors

French doors are often a great way to make your home look more elegant and open because they let in more light. But many insurance companies worry about their safety because they have glass panels and a weak spot in the middle of the door. Because of this, you should use a deadbolt that is at least an inch long. Along with a mortice lock, this one is built into the door, which makes it stronger and safer. Having locks on both the top and bottom will make the weak point in the middle much less likely to break.

Electronic and digital door locks

With the rise of digital technology and more security options, you have a lot of options for how to keep your home safe with digital door locks. Some of them let you open and close the lock with just your phone, so you don’t even need a key. If you want your home to be more connected, a smart lock is a great addition. Not only can you control who gets in and out of your home, but you can also keep track of who does so when you’re not there. Some models even let you give your friends or family members special rights Insurance Approved Locks

If you do have one, make sure the door lock apps are up-to-date, the passwords are safe, and a PIN is turned on. Your home insurance doesn’t change because you have electronic or digital door locks. As long as they work with a mortice deadlock, your front door will be just as safe as if it had a standard lock with a key. If my locks are approved, will I be able to get a better deal on my home insurance?

If you have modern locks that are approved and that your insurance company suggests, you may get a better deal and pay less for your home insurance. If you don’t have good locks, you might not be able to get home insurance or you might have to pay more. But this is not the only thing that can help you find cheap home insurance. Other things to think about are where you live, if you are home during the day, what valuables you have, and if you have ever been burgled before.

Different insurance companies will have different requirements, so it is important to compare quotes. Remember that you should always look around for the best deal on home insurance. And always check the policy’s terms, like what security standards you have to meet, because if you don’t, it could make a future claim impossible Insurance Approved Locks

On the other hand, if you can do more than meet the policy’s requirements, you might be able to get a better deal on your home insurance. So, start using our research on approved locks today to find a lock that works for your home and then check to see if you can save money on your home Insurance Approved Locks.
